Football Philanthropy
The Surfing Sisters of Delta Zeta recently completed their Football Fundraiser in which sisters donate based on the amount of losses of their chosen Professional or College Football Teams. Half of the money raised is donated to the Delta Zeta Foundation, and this year, based on the winners’ choices, the other half will be split amongst Meals on Wheels, Children’s Miracle Network, and Georgetown Kids Clinic for the Deaf. Another fundraiser is currently being planned and implemented for the Spring.

In 1954 Delta Zetas in the Washington DC area became involved with the Gallaudet College for the Deaf, now known as Gallaudet University. In 1955 Lucille Hunt Pendell, AE, was librarian and a new library was in the process of being built. While funds were available for the building itself, nothing was allocated for the furnishings to acquire books to fill the shelves. She persuaded the Washington D.C. alumnae chapter and national council members to visit. After a visit by President Evelyn Adams Costello, Gallaudet was named one of our national philanthropic projects. Another result of the visit was the sponsoring by Delta Zeta to donate money for the furnishings, which was inaugurated with a $10,000 gift. A National Director of Philanthropy was also added to National Council to accommodate our growing philanthropic involvement . Over the years we have gone on to support students of Gallaudet by funding a Delta Zeta Scholarship Fund and a Fine Arts Endowment Fund, and in 1995 the Delta Zeta Dance Studio, also funded by the sorority, was dedicated. The dance studio is the home of the Gallaudet Dance Company which is a group of approximately 15 dancers. All members of the company are undergraduate or graduate Gallaudet students with varying degree of hearing loss and communication modalities.

The Very Pink of Perfection
Surfing Sisters of Delta Zeta Alumnae Chapter proudly announces the launching of our 3rd Annual philanthropic campaign,
The Very Pink of Perfection
This award-winning program is designed to benefit the well being of each participating sister and her community.
“The Very Pink of Perfection” is an opportunity for each of us to realize the ultimate makeover!
Beginning on July 15th 2010, and continuing through May 15, 2011, sisters are invited to participate in “Delta Zeta: The Very Pink of Perfection” by completing 8 out of the 11 tasks in the following list:
- Aug: Have your Body Mass Index determined
- Sept:Melanoma Focus – Have a Skin screening
- Oct: Perform Random Acts of Kindness
- Nov: Community Service such as Food/goods Donation and/or volunteering time at a Community center or shelter
- Dec: Help Others by Donating Blood or, get registered on the bone marrow donor registry, and/or become an organ donor
- Jan: Check on Vaccinations and ensure that they are up-to-date
- Feb: American Heart Month – Have BP/cholesterol Checked
- Mar: Save your Vision Month – Have an Eye/vision screening
- Apr: Mental Health Focus – Personal Relaxation Activities (get a massage, special spa treatment, “a day away”, etc.)
- May: Better Hearing Month – Have a hearing screening
- June:Run/Walk in a 5K (or greater!)
Each of these tasks was selected to focus on personal and community needs. By completing 8 of the 11 tasks, you will effectively improve your own well-being, be it emotional and/or physical, as well as your community.
To meet the requirements for the program, all activities must be completed in the 7/15/10 – 5/15/11 time span. Although each month has a particular focus, tasks may be completed ANY TIME during the 10-month participation period. Throughout the year we will be doing a short presentation about that month’s topic.
A special sheet will be available for you to keep track of your efforts to complete this campaign within the next week.
We encourage all Sisters to participate in this outstanding program, completing as many of the tasks as possible. We recognize that not all members will be able to complete the requested 8 of 11. Our goal is to encourage every level of partipation so we will be recognizing all sisters who choose participate. Those Sisters who are able to complete 8 of the 11 tasks will receive a certificate of completion in addition to special recognition on Surfing Sisters. Those Sisters who are able to go that “extra mile” and complete all 11 tasks will be entered into a drawing for a unique recognition gift to be awarded in June, 2011. Sisters who participate will need to include proof of completed tasks in order to qualify for the program. Accepted forms of proof include photocopies of receipts, donor cards, appointment cards from agencies, and letters from volunteer organizations, the one exception being a Random Act of Kindness which we will allow to be based on the sister’s own description submitted with the other forms of proof. All forms of proof will remain confidential and will be destroyed immediately upon review.
Please exhibit your very perfect pink by joining your Delta Zeta sisters in the Surfing Sisters Alumnae Chapter’s 2010 – 2011 Very Pink of Perfection Campaign, and make over yourself and your community!
